Turlough Company (Castlebar)

In 1920 a company of the IRA was formed in the Turlough area east of Castlebar. This company was part of the 1st (Castlebar Battalion, West Mayo Brigade. The Original O/C was Michael Burke, with J.J Philbin as 1st Lieutenant and J.J. Durcan as 2nd Lieutenant. The Battalion O/C James Chambers became aware that the company was not functioning properly after it’s formation. The problems lingered on until the Battalion Council decided to close down the company.
