In 1920 a company of the IRA was formed in the Turlough area east of Castlebar. This company was part of the 1st (Castlebar Battalion, West Mayo Brigade. The Original O/C was Michael Burke, with J.J Philbin as 1st Lieutenant and J.J. Durcan as 2nd Lieutenant. The Battalion O/C James Chambers became aware that the company was not functioning properly after it’s formation. The problems lingered on until the Battalion Council decided to close down the company. The Volunteers were then transferred as half company attached to the Castlebar No.1 Company on the 1st of July 1922. The following were transferred
