Photo of James “Broddy” Carney, Captain Westport Company at time of the Truce. He was at the attempted ambush at Glosh, Murrisk, 17 March, 1921. He became ill after this and was replaced by Liam Malone. He died at his home from TB. He was also a member of Fianna scouts and is in the group photo taken of the Westport in 1915. He was a brother of Frank Carney the noted playwright
Cover from a book written about RIC District Inspector Francis Maguire, who gave valuable information to Johnny Gibbons of the Westport Company. When his superiors in the RIC became of aware of his “treachery ” he was moved back to the depot in Dublin. The Free State government made him a Superintendent in the new Civic Guard. He was stationed in West Limerick and died c1927.

Christy O’Malley who was in charge of the Free State army that landed at Westport 24 July 1922. He is sitting behind Joe Ring on the armoured car at the Town Hall. They have the same rank marking. Joe Ring had command of the Mayo battalion and Christy O’Malley has command of the Dublin half battalion.
